Hold Pickup

Where is hold pickup available?

Hold pickup is available at Central Library, Banning Branch Library, Helen Murphy Branch Library, and Oak View Branch Library.

When is hold pickup available?

Once you receive a notification that your hold is available for pick up, you can pick it up at the location you selected when placing the hold. 

Central Library: Monday - Thursday 9:00 am - 1:00 pm, and 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm. The library is closed between the hours of 1:00-2:00. Friday and Saturday hours are 9:00 am -1:00 pm. Once you arrive at the library, text "Here" to 714-880-7040 or call 714-842-4481 to let a library employee know you've arrived.

Banning Branch Library: Tuesday 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm and Thursdays and Saturdays 9:00 am - 1:00 pm. Once you arrive at the library, call 714-375-5005 to let a library employee know you've arrived.

Helen Murphy Branch Library: Monday and Wednesday 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm. Once you arrive at the library, call 714-375-5006 to let a library employee know you've arrived.

Main Street Branch Library: Wednesday and Friday 9:00 am - 1:00 pm. Once you arrive at the library, call 714-375-5071 to let a library employee know you've arrived.

Oak View Branch Library: Tuesday and Thursday 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm. Once you arrive at the library, call 714-375-5068 to let a library employee know you've arrived.

What if I don't have a cell phone?

If you do not have a cell phone, please call 714-842-4481 to schedule an appointment to pick up your items. Staff will be available from 9:00 -1:00, & 2:00 - 6:00  Monday through Thursday. Friday and Saturday hours are 9:00 - 1:00.

How do I place a hold request online?
  • Login with your barcode number, 14 digits, no spaces (normally begins with 2111900xxxxxxx). Your PIN# is the last four numbers of your phone number when you registered for your library card.
  • Search and locate the item that you would like to request.
  • Click on the Place Hold button. A request confirmation screen will appear.
  • Click the Place Hold button to finalize.
How many items can I place on hold?

You can place 10 items on hold (this is a new limit during modified service).

Can I cancel holds I no longer want?

Yes! By canceling holds you no longer want, you'll make those materials available for patrons who have requested them. You'll also free space on your card to place new items on hold. 

To cancel a hold: 
  • Login with your barcode number, 14 digits, no spaces (normally begins with 2111900xxxxxxx). Your PIN# is the last four numbers of your phone number when you registered for your library card.
  • Go to the Holds tab.
  • Select the checkbox next to the item(s) you want to cancel.
  • Select "Cancel Hold" at the bottom or top of the page.
Are you going to offer expanded hours? When will I be able to pick up holds at my branch?

We are starting slowly with our holds pickup service to make sure everything runs as expected. As we develop the procedures to ensure that we can provide this service smoothly, we will look at offering other times, days and locations. We will keep you updated on social media. 

Can I place a request for an item available through another library system (Interlibrary Loan)?

At this time, we are not placing requests through interlibrary loan.

What procedures are you following to keep staff and materials safe?

The safety of our staff and patrons has been the primary concern as we deliver library services.

- All staff working in the building has been provided with face masks, gloves, and hand sanitizer to utilize while in the library and handling materials. All staff will be taught how to use protective equipment before returning to work.

- All materials will go through a 72-hour quarantine period before being returned to circulation.

Why are you quarantining materials for 72 hours?

The 72 hour quarantine is based on studies done of CoV-SARS-2 (Covid-19) on various types of library materials. You can read more about the REALM project here

Why are you closed from 1-2?

From 1-2 we clean and wipe down surfaces in between our shift change. 

When will the library reopen?

While we do not have a date for when our buildings will fully reopen for in-person services, our Grab & Go Service is currently available at Central Library, and Sidewalk Service is available at the Central, Banning Branch, and Oak View Branch locations.

Why is the drive up circle closed?

On advice from HBPD, we've closed the drive-up circle during sidewalk service to encourage a better flow of traffic and ensure pedestrian safety.

Book Returns

When and where can I return my items?

You can return all HBPL materials, including books, DVDs, magazines, and CDs, to any HBPL branch. Central, Main Street, Banning, and Murphy book drops are available 24/7. Oak View book drop is open Monday through Thursday 10-7.

I have items belonging to a branch. Can I return them to Central?

Yes! All HBPL items can be returned to any branch, regardless of which branch they belong to.

I returned my items. Why are they still on my card?

All materials are being quarantined for 72 hours before being checked in. Once the 72-hour period is over, the items will be checked in and removed from your card. Items may stay on your card for up to 5 days. Please be patient as we work through the extraordinary amount of items we have at this time. 

Will I receive fines for items I don't return?

No, you will not receive any new fines for overdue items. However, you will not be able to check out more items if you've reached the maximum for your card. There is a 72 hour waiting period before any returned items will be removed from your card. 

Can I drop off donations?

No. Unfortunately, we don't have volunteers in the building to sort donated materials. When our volunteers come back, we'll let you know that we are accepting donations again.
