Adult Literacy Services provides free one-on-one and small-group tutoring for adults who want to improve their basic reading and writing or ESL skills. Volunteer tutors tailor instruction to each adult learner’s individual literacy goals and aspirations. The weekly two-hour tutoring sessions are at flexible times. A one-year commitment is required to enroll in the Adult Literacy Program.

Did you know that 20% of adults in the U.S. read at or below the basic level needed to earn a living wage? Change a life and help an adult learner improve their basic literacy skills to achieve personal goals! No experience is required. We will provide training, support, and materials. The program has two sites: Central Library and Oak View Branch Library.
How to Support Literacy Services
Literacy Volunteers - HBPL, founded in 1984 by Linda D. Light, is the fundraising arm of Adult Literacy Services. The program is funded by the California State Library, the City of Huntington Beach, as well as by corporate and private donations. Funds are always needed for books, equipment, and program expenses.
